In the 19th century, bullfighters grew a ponytail that they braided into a bun, a reminder of the wigs of the 18th century.
The ponytail also served to cushion the blow in case of a fall. When retiring, the bullfighter cut his ponytail, an expression that has entered popular language as a synonym for abandoning a profession.
Juan Belmonte was the first bullfighter to do without the natural ponytail in active practice and, since then, bullfighters use a hairpiece called castañeta.
